Preparing for an English exam is not the same as reviewing English

It is a common story. A student has worked hard, their English is good, and they still come out of the exam with a lower score than expected. Often the problem is not their English. It is that they met the exam for the first time on the day.
A general English course builds level. Exam preparation builds level plus everything the exam adds on top: the format, the clock and the question types. Here are four habits that make the difference.
1. Take the exam apart first
Before any practice, students should know exactly what they are facing. How many sections are there? How long does each one run? What is actually being scored, and how? When students understand the structure, every lesson after that has a clear place in it.
In our exam courses, the opening unit does exactly this. It takes the exam apart so students know the map before they start the journey.
2. Teach a strategy for each question type
Every exam uses a small set of item formats, and each one rewards a different approach. Students need a plan for each format: what to read first, what to look for, and when to move on.
Strategy also means managing the clock. Students should practise what to do when time gets tight, so they do not lose easy marks at the end of a section because they spent too long on one hard question.
3. Run full mock tests
Practising one question at a time is useful, but it is not the exam. Students also need module practice and complete run-throughs under real conditions, so they build the stamina and pacing the full test demands. By exam day, nothing about the experience should be a surprise.
4. Use results to decide who is ready
Mock results are not only for students. Teachers and coordinators can use them to see who is ready and who needs another pass. That conversation is much better to have before a student pays an exam registration fee than after.
In Smrt English, practice exam results go straight into group reporting, so coordinators can see the picture for a whole class at a glance.
Bringing it together
None of this replaces building a student's English. It sits on top of it. A student with a solid level and a clear understanding of the exam is the student who walks in calm and walks out with the score they deserve.
Smrt English has preparation courses for iTEP, ELASH II, the Oxford Test of English, TOEFL ITP, IELTS, CELPIP and CAEL, each built around these habits. Browse the exam prep courses or contact our team to see one from the inside.
