Smrt app

Use the Smrt app as a student

Study on your phone with the Smrt app, using the same account, classes and scores as the website. It works offline too.

For students4 stepsUpdated 7 October 2026

The Smrt app for iPhone and Android works together with the Smrt English website. You sign in with the same account, see the same classes, and your work and scores are the same in both places.

The Home screen and a lesson in the Smrt app

Get the app

Already have the Smrt app? Update it to get the new version.

If you are signed in to the website on your phone, it may offer to open the app. Tap Switch to the App, or Close to stay in the browser.

Tap Log in with Google or Log in with Microsoft. Use the same email address you use on the website, or your classes will not be there. Can't sign in? See I can't sign in to the Smrt app.

The app has no sign-up and no password reset. If the app says there is no Smrt English account for your email, ask your teacher or school to add you. See Sign in with Google or Microsoft.

Home

Home shows what to do next:

  • Your class, with the next exercise or quiz and a Start or Continue button.
  • Your open quizzes and exercises.
  • Recent feedback: work your teacher has reviewed, answers they have released, and quiz results, with their comments.

Exercises

The Exercises tab lists all your work. Use the chips to see To do, Complete or Incomplete work, and search by title or unit.

  1. Tap an exercise. If you have not started it, its lesson opens first so you can read it.

  2. Tap Start exercise at the bottom of the lesson.

  3. Answer the questions. Your answers save as you go, so you can stop and finish later.

  4. Open All questions and tap Submit answers. After you submit, you cannot change your answers.

The app has every question type, including recording your voice for speaking questions. Tap the microphone to record, and Record again to try again. See Record a speaking answer in the app.

After you submit, you see your score and the first mistakes to look at again. If your teacher has hidden the answers, your score shows when they release them. See Exercise question types and how they are marked.

Quizzes

The Quizzes tab shows quizzes that are in progress, available and completed. Tap Start quiz to begin. The quiz has a time limit and closes at its due time, so read the start screen first. If you leave, your answers are saved and you can tap Resume quiz.

Quizzes need an internet connection. See Take a quiz in the Smrt app.

Your class

The Class tab shows your course, your teacher and your progress, for example "12 of 20 done". Open a unit to see its lessons. A green tick on a unit means you have handed in everything assigned in it. If your class has a meeting link, you can join the class meeting from here.

If you are in more than one class, the tab is called Classes and lists them all.

Join a class

  1. Open Class and tap Join class.

  2. Enter the class code from your teacher.

In most classes you join straight away. In kids' classes, your teacher needs to accept you first.

You can also scan your teacher's QR code with your phone's camera. The app opens with the code filled in. See Join a class in the Smrt app.

Smrt Café

The Café tab has short videos for practice. Search, or choose a topic. Videos need an internet connection.

Study offline

The app works without the internet. After you sign in, it asks what to save on your phone:

  • Exercises: the pictures and audio for your exercises.
  • Lessons and exercises: also the pictures and audio of the lessons you have work in. This takes more space.
  • Don't save: nothing extra. The text of your lessons and exercises is always saved.

Files download on Wi-Fi. To change your choice, open Profile and go to Offline.

When you are offline:

  • Exercises shows the work you can do now.
  • Work you hand in shows Waiting to send. It is sent when you are back online.
  • Quizzes and the Café come back when you are online.

See Use the Smrt app without internet and My work says "Waiting to send" in the app.

Notifications

Turn on notifications to hear about:

  • New work from your teacher.
  • Work due tomorrow, at 6 pm the evening before.
  • Answers your teacher has released, and work they have reviewed.

The app sends no notifications between 9 pm and 7 am in your school's time zone, and at most two reminders a day. To choose which ones you get, open Profile and go to Notifications. See Turn app notifications on or off.

Your profile

Tap your picture to open Profile. You can change your name and photo, choose light or dark mode, and change your offline and notification settings. Report a problem sends a message to Smrt English support.
